The Big Issue - Lesson 6
Task One: How they've adapted to Covid:
- the topics are highly based on covid and how to stay safe, help out, any charity work etc - Captain Tom
- a lot of celebrity endorsement - Dolly Parton, Lin Manuel Miranda etc. - more exciting content
- rather than focusing on the governments actions and the negative effects - they're more recently moved to being positive
Task Two: Article:
- had a need for £60,000 within the first two or so months
- sales on the street stopped - moved to Sainsbury's and McColls
- still give 50% of the £3
- subscriptions were offered
- The Guardian would publish this as an ally with another charity and the same beliefs
ABBA/politicians Cover: key points
- audience (ABC1) will understand the references to both
- insult those who lead - will likely be informative and entertaining - they hold anyone accountable
- talking of break ups - brexit - gives a unique representation that others wouldn't give
Analyse why The Big Issue magazine has used an intertextual approach to the political landscape of the moment on the front cover. You must...
- Jamie Reid - the artist for the Sex Pistol's album covers, poster etc. - same iconic safety pin, pink/yellow referencing the 'Never mind the bollocks...' album.
- ABC1 audience will know
- 'Spirit of rebellion' - always been against the government - fitting the big issues ethos for holding people to account
How to structure:
- know what intertextuality is
- why TBI regularly uses it
- identify the references - what does it imply?
- how is the representations created? - how does it push the ethos?
- why is this advantageous?
