 Context/Intertextuality:

  • Pigs take over the farm - reference to Trump?
  • Sectioned up like butchers do - does this reference the similarities between trump's leadership and the pigs? he's just like them.
  • Sectioned into red and blue - like the US is democrat v republican
  • Insults Trump's leadership with the ultimate downfall of the president and farm

- offering ethical capitalism: hand up not a hand out, campaign for social inclusion

Explain why magazines outside commercial mainstream construct alternative representations refer to the big issue (10 marks):
  • TBI is outside the mainstream as it's a not-for-profit organisation
  • They embrace their different beliefs and aims to make it even more differentiated - challenge stereotypes
  • They have a purpose other than profit and solely entertainment
Representations:
How the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups
  • presented through processes of selection and combination
  • re-representations create versions of reality
  • the process in which producers go through to reach representations
  • the effect social and cultural context has on rep.
Trump Cover:
Who: Donald Trump
How: negatively
Language: melting ice cream (sloppy), seasonal, 'flake news' = play on 'fake news' (he's flaky). He is infront of the same shape sticker as Hamilton - he is the new American history... and that's what they have.
What: He is a burnout and sloppy to lead a country. He's good for one season.
Why: The Big Issue opposes those who don't fit their beliefs

Who: Hamilton
How: positively
Language: gold sticker (good)
What: it's something to see, it's an addition to the magazine, this is happening too (not just about trump)
Why: the show has given the power back to the African Americans who were oppressed by the founding fathers - The Big Issue support correct representation and anti-racism.
