News Lesson 1&2

Does the news interest you?
Paper versions don't however online articles do as they are more adapted to what i'm interested in. Paper versions are more political which doesn't interest me.

Why do we need press?
- Inform readers with facts and opinions to enable their own judgments - can be bias to the editor and owner.
- Newspapers feature celebrity/pop culture, sports TV and puzzles
- should follow other views too so were challenged allowing us to make new judgments - not one sided.

Why do people read the news?
- Diversion - escape from routine problems - takes mind off things
- Personal relationships - to be able to be part of conversations or conversely for companionship
- Personal identity - for instance to reinforce values or change the view on something
- Information - factors which could affect you - stay up to date

Do we still need the news?
Yes, it allows us to be informed of what is happening in our country, government, community which could affect is at some point so we need to know about events.

Newspaper Industries: organisations, people and activities involved in making the product

Productions: sales of newspaper are declining (expensive committees)
- expensive to produce - material, highly educated journalists employed in city centers.
- Once its printed, its already old news

Distribution:
- expensive for travel - online factors in no travel cost and not restricted by boundaries (countries)

Circulation: Number of newspapers that are distributed not sold - important for advertising rates

Ownership:
Media Barons - wealthy individuals who own the paper or a group of papers
Trusts - legal arrangement where finances are transferred to trustees to control the paper without direct supervision from owner.
Cross media conglomerates - organisations owning various media outlets

UK print news is owned by 7 companies
- Rupert Murdoch News UK (1/3), Viscount Rothmere with DMG Media (24%)

Most journalists are freelance:
- journalists send their work to press agencies eg: press association (PA) - unbiased group who provide objective info to clients
- info is sold to papers who decide how to publish it (view/twist)
- RM & VR = shareholders of PA

Solutions implemented:
Paywalls - subscription - audiences can no longer access content for free. Times, financial times, the sun, telegraph - worked for the times to some extent
Donations = suggesting donations from viewers. Most non-Murdoch papers kind of work
Embrace new technologies - reduces environmental costs - easily accessed and shared
