Quiz:
1. Burn The Witch - Radiohead uses intertexuality as it uses the same animation as Trumpton, the 80's children's show. It also references The Wicker Man (the 70's film) when the inspector is burnt in an assembled wicker man.
2. Heaven was released in 2011
3. Burn The Witch is by Radiohead
4. Mike Spencer produced the Heaven video -

Purpose of music videos:
- promote the artist
- create a brand image
- comment on society
- target specific audience/market

Methods in music videos:
- performance element
- close ups of the artist
- mise en scene (furthers thew brand image)
- editing (match the pace and feel of the music)
- stories and characters to relate to
- follow or subvert conventions

Heaven:
Pushes the understanding of life in London, from Sande's point of view. It's set where she is from, showing her grounded and humble image. It constructs her star image with the more serious, vintage/retro look. There is no big dance break or a specific set narrative. It follows her performing her music. Her hair is cut short, something more uncommon in women but is also bold and a statement about her image. She is also mainly seen covered in dark clothing, shot from the chest up. This shows the focus being on the music and the art of it instead of her being the focus or centre. The scenes most memorable are the close ups of the public. Seeing their eyes and emotion expressed - shows a struggle among the lower class. The shots of Sande performing in a bare brick walled building stand out as it's not clean, colourful and upbeat - it's raw and meaningful (unlike the mainstream pop music nowadays). Strauss is less relevant as Sande strides to identify with the others featured instead of contrast and maybe seem above them. Todorov is also irrelevant to Heaven as it is more a performing video rather than one that tells a story. As it was Sande's first success, it's seems more of a way to establish herself. The editing is slower and smooth between peaceful shots. It creates a calm, heavenly feel to fit with the song. Low angled shots are used for the performance shots of Sande herself. She is seen singing with clear blue skies behind her as if she is in heaven.

Burn The Witch:
The video revolves around an outsider coming to a 'perfect' village. This can indicate various things that relate to society. How there is so much secrecy, there's no real perfection - if there is, it's toxic. The artists image is portrayed as they stick to peculiar videos, ones that keep the audience guessing. They also seem to rebel against society's norm of music or videos, it fits well with their established image. The mise en scene that is most memorable are the points where camera shots don't reveal the full image. For example, when the girl is decorating a wooden post with flowers. It seems innocent and provincial. However, once the angle is changed, it reveals they are are decorating a gallow - something extremely sinister, not innocent at all. Strauss and Todorov are more relevant here. The contrast of the visitor to the inhabitants of the community creates a tension, the audience are lead to question how he will be treated. The is also various parts of equilibrium. When the visitor first arrive it's still peaceful, things change as tension builds as he is then burnt. Once he escapes a new equilibrium is created. The editing is slower at the start but quickens as tension builds (in order to increase that tension). The cuts become harsher and crisper to show the angles and create a full experience of the daunting situation.

1. Both Heaven and Burn The Witch challenge the norm of music videos. Heaven is not a colourful, upbeat, packaged reality - instead it is raw and real, something that is not seen in the charts of today's pop music. Burn The Witch used mass intertexuality to create something for that target audience but also to stand out. The song alone holds sinister language which is, again, not seen much. Both methods are used to standout and make a change. The typical indie audience of Radiohead are connected to standing out of society anyway.
2. Sande created this video to establish herself as she had not been seen in the industry before. Instead of going with a typical love song or narrative, she chose to show herself as she is, where she comes from and who she relates to. It gave the audience an insight to her as a person rather than an artist.
3. The representations in Heaven are still  relevant as it shows the lower class, outskirts of London. People who are very much still there. Radioheads representations of a 'perfect town' may not be directly relevant but the secrecy, tension, toxic perfection is relevant with today's government, society's norms etc.
4. I would watch Radiohead's video on repeat because everytime, a new thing is revealed, something i missed the last time. Even though i prefer the song Heaven, the narrative of Burn The Witch is more engaging and packed.
