Netflix Factfile:

How it began:
- 1997, Mark Randolf and Reid Hastings created a postal service for films on demand (in competition with blockbuster).
- Started as VHS and DVD's in the mail but as technology advanced so did the services. It developed to streaming films on the app to then also producing their own successful content.

Netflix now has 167 million subscribers as of January 2020 which is across 190 countries. However, this didn't come easily as Netflix has an operational debt of $14.6 billion. Not factoring in their predicted spending this year of $17.3 billion (as CEO Ted Sarandos has stated for investment in original content) which will grow to $26 billion in 2028.
Its worth is $130 billion and alternatively releases its profits as a whole, not per programme. This could be a tactical move to hide any obvious flops in their portfolio of programmes and films.

Awards:
- Netflix has won a variety of 72 awards over Academy Awards, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes etc for most recently Marriage Story and The Irishman. However, it has actually been nominated 432 times.

Netflix now produces 126 original programmes every year (from 2016), resulting in 802 hours of original content. The binge-ability of these shows is created carefully for example, Stranger Things only has 8 episodes in its first series to make it easier to watch all at once/continuously. They offer options to what the next episode straight away in a matter of seconds so the viewer doesn't even have to pick up their remote. This contributes to high viewing stats and subscribers as it creates almost a cinematic experience in that you can continue to be lost in the programme with little interruption.
