News Q3 - 10 Marks

Explain how the political context in which newspapers are produced, influences their ownership and regulation. Refer to the Guardian and the Daily Mail newspapers you've studied to support your answer.

The ownership and regulation directly correlates with the political context of the papers. In UK press, the dominated market creates a majority for right wing papers, owned by Murdoch and Rothmere.

For instance, the Daily Mail is owned by DMGT, which is then owned by Viscount Rothmere. This means his overpowering views are projected through his papers. As seen in the Daily Mail, right wing political views are pushed and seen by the majority of the press. This ownership means political context is highly influencing. Likewise, the Guardian is left wing and is shown through their liberal owner, The Scott Trust. Their views are seen in their papers and website in order to target their audience.

The regulation of the papers closely correlates with the political context too. The Daily Mail, over seen by IPSO, operated with a lot of allowance for their testing subjects. As the content is conservative, the organisation of IPSO accepts it's publishing. However, the Guardian are independently regulated by IMPRESS. In order to survive in a typically right leaning market, the Guardian have to be regulated by a more relatable organisation. It also extends to online as they have a higher readership. They escape the regulation due to the complexity of posting, sharing etc. so they can compete better with the conservative press.

Overall, the political context highly influences the ownership and regulation ion order for the papers to survive as products. The Daily Mail and Guardian both tailor their content for not only their readers but their owners. And ultimately are regulated accordingly.

  1. Olivia - What you say is accurate and well explained, but this is too brief. You don't provide any case study examples to support your ideas and this costs you. You also don't talk about funding models and ownership directly which is a key part of this answer. Knowledge is good, but a little more needed. 4 marks
